Light in the Kamora

These past few days a friend has been trying to get me to concur with his theories, Ugandans (living in uganda) change their schedule according to the weather.

Theory I
When the sun rises at 7.00am, traffic flow will get thick at about 7.15am, however, when the sun chooses to show up at about 6.20am, traffic flow will get thick at about 6.45am.

In the March, we cruised along Kampala roads between 6.20 & 6.30 and there was literally zero traffic, today however, just 15 meters from home 4 taxis rushed past us, obviously in a race with each other – further along, we were met by quite a number of joggers, then more traffic at another intersection and it was just 6.30am.

Theory II
When it rains, the roads quickly clear up, however as soon as the rain lets up, Kampalans will quickly rush to the roads to get to where they need to be before it starts pouring again. Kampalans also have an interesting excuse as to why they do not walking/travel during a rain shower – “eeh eh! I will get malaria”

One time during one of those rainy seasons early this year, I ventured out – you know, being the different Kampalan and all – i quickly found shelter and waited for a taxi, next to me was a boda guy also seeking shelter with his boda boda. So i eavesdropped on his phone conversation, apparently the brother was  his way to pick up school kids and take them to school, but it had started drizzling again and he had to take shelter. The Kids mother called him to ask where he was, brother says, it is rainning. Mother – so?. Brother – children shouldn’t walk in rain, they will get malaria…..

Another time, it had started drizzling, luckily i was at my stop, so I rush out, dash across the road and signal my regular boda guy, who happened to be sitting on his boda on a veranda. Brother looked at me, smiled, shook his head sideways, then pointed to the sky, then pointed to his bald head – it took a second to dawn on me that the brother was saying, he don’t ride in a drizzle coz of his bald head…

All this while I have been antagonising my friend about his theories, telling him he needed more data to prove his theory, but even I gotta admit it is sounding more and more convincing.
