My Creepy Town

10 Nov

I’d like to begin by saying: I am one of those sisters, you know….the ones that are not budged by superstition, after all I didn’t grow up surrounded by that stuff.

So anyway, the house-help left on Saturday morning for a 4-day trip. So guess who is stuck doing the dishes? That’s right, moi! Last night, TRP labors at the sink, which after close to 15 years needs to be replaces. Like most Ugandan homes, frying and oil is the order of the day, so I needed hot water.

This was my 5th and last trip to the Sigiri (Stove). I open the door and you wouldn’t believe who crossed my path!! The Black Kitty!! Now I had never seen a full black Kitty in person, only in those witch/warlock movies. So you can only imagine what I did…. Shriek for dear life, then slam the door shut….Then bellow out my little sisters name…(What?! It’s a perfectly normal reaction) so I convince her that Blackness was interested in eating out shoes which were outside, then together we went out and removed all our belongings and brought them into the house.

On a separate occasion, this boda dude, I like to call him Haji. I used to wonder why he would speed off after dropping me, so this day he opens up. Then he explains to me: right next the fence we have a tree that house lots of noisy little birds…This guy tells me in this haughty voice – “Do you hear those birds – the way they are making noise?? That means that there is a snake near by!!!” I smile and say – really?? After a few weeks he says the exact same thing – So when I walk in I examine the tree, nara a slithery object…However, these days I don’t just linger there.

Different occasion, this time this is the village myth. I used to wonder how the old lady of the area had sold my parents that piece of land. Then I found out why:

Apparently, the tree across from the fence (It is actually directly opposite the Birdy-snake tree) is a creeper. At night the tree walks and inches into the road. I guess it doesn’t help that its branches reach out and touch those of our Birdy-snake tree.

Another village one: Now this one is opposite a different side of the wall. This one was one of those African trees that grow like an umbrella. You know all majestic in its beauty, until it gets to the dry season and all its leaves are blown into out compound and your truly is stuck with raking! Anyway, it was said that this tree was the meeting place for all the ghosts and spirits in the area….

Does your area beat mine in creepiness?
